  • My van running a bit difnreeftly to a car?Hi guysI realize this will be a little difficult to answer given that you can’t watch me drive or feel my van running, but i recently bought a van, it’s a Mazda E2000 long wheel base (LWB) 5 speed manual, 2.0L unleaded engine with 82,000kms. I’ve only had it for a few weeks now and drive it, say, only every couple of days. Anyway, it’s actually my first ever manual car and honestly i’ve never actually been taught to drive one, although i get the jist and have tried in friends’ and ex-girlfriends’ manuals etc. I was told (and have found) that really 1st gear is pretty much useless (i guess you’d have a fairly heavy load inside to need it), so i take off in 2nd and change at 3000rpm to 3rd, 3000rpm to 4th and about 2500rpm to 5th (at 70km/h roughly). Last night I drove about 40km to pick up 2 couches and some other stuff and 40km back so maybe a moderate load, and I’ve found that as I get to the point of taking my foot off the clutch 3/4 of the way when taking off in 2nd it briefly feels (and sounds) just a teeny bit sluggish, and when releasing the clutch to engage 3rd it just does this slight little jolt (very small). Does this mean I really need to release the clutch slower when taking off (i’m doing it pretty slow), and release it faster into 3rd??Also, what do you think is the best approximate RPM to be travelling at when cruising? (and changing gears etc etc if you can answer that) Because when I’m cruising at 60-65km/h and the engine is doing about 2400-2500rpm in 4th it sounds ok i guess, and if I go into 5th at this speed the RPM is about 1900-2000rpm and it kind of sounds like the difference between hearing someone with a mid-tone sounding voice to someone with a bit of a deep-ish voice? Is this something that effects the clutch more than anything?Sorry for the amateur description, any tips and advice on how best to drive this thing would be much appreciated! Thanks
